Description
Come hear Authors Brandon Marie Miller and Kerri Hollihan discuss the business of writing non fiction for children.
Brandon Marie Miller writes award-winning history for young people. Her books have been honored by such organizations as the International Reading Association, the National Council for the Social Studies, the New York Public Library, the Chicago Public Library, VOYA , Bank Street College, and the Junior Library Guild. Brandon earned her degree in American history from Purdue University. She bases her writing on primary research and likes to let people from the past speak for themselves whenever possible. She lives in Cincinnati and enjoys reading murder mysteries, watching old movies, traveling and talking! For more on Brandon's books visit www.brandonmariemiller.com
Kerrie Logan Hollihan decided to channel her “inner 6th grade girl who read Compton’s encyclopedia for fun” and started writing for kids in 2005. From 38,000 word biography/activity books about Isaac Newton, Theodore Roosevelt, and Queen Elizabeth I, Hollihan made the leap to writing an easy reader series on Latin American celebrations. Her books have been honored by Junior Library Guild and the Chicago Public Library.
“Kids don’t get enough credit for being able to understand history as it actually happened. As I write for middle graders, I try to explain the ‘whys’ of situations as well as the ‘whats.’ History is filled with great yet fully human men and women with faults and foibles. When I tell the stories of famous people, there are tough topics to address -- segregated America and religious persecution in England are two topics I’ve tackled recently.”
